Tom Peters once said, “The number one premise of business is that it need not be boring or dull. It ought to be fun. If it’s not fun, you’re wasting your life.” He hit the nail right on the head. Tom wrote that incredible best-selling book, “In Search of Excellence” with Bob Waterman. They studied over 43 successful American companies and developed winning principles for management success. Most successful companies are fun companies to work for, which brings me to a topic close to my heart: Blackman Bucks!
The premise of the Blackman Bucks program is to give our employees opportunities to have fun on the job, win prizes and provide team-building opportunities. Last year we gave away over $12,000 to our employees who participated in the program! There are actually 19 different ways to win Blackman Bucks including participating in fun meetings, creating a Standard Operating Procedure, earning positive comments from clients, perfect attendance and earning a client special efforts award. You can earn five Blackman Bucks just for becoming a new IST site employee.
The prizes are quite incredible. One of the top prizes is a $1,000 Shell gas gift card. Others include a $500 gift card for the Apple store. My favorite is granting someone an extra paid personal day off from work. The prizes are actually won through a friendly, but competitive, on-line bidding process. It’s similar to bidding for products on eBay. Four times a year we have an on-line auction via IST-Suite. Auctions are open for several days, but all of them end over a weekend to minimize workflow at a client site. Prizes are awarded to the highest bidder.
Naturally, we want to keep the system safe and secure, so employees are given a user name and password upon hire to enable them to log in to IST-Suite. Employees can access IST-Suite from any computer. Of course, one of the best parts of the Blackman Bucks program are the annual videos created by our incredible Marketing department. Once a year we create a new video to feature the winner of the Blackman Bucks program. Through a drawing personally conducted by me, one participating employee wins a whopping $2,000 cash prize! Last year, Ralph Feliciano, site manager at our New York Life account in New Jersey, won the grand prize. Congratulations Ralph!
So what’s it all about? At IST we work hard and play hard. We may not love every aspect of the work that we do. The true reward is gaining satisfaction and rewards for doing a good job. It’s called pride in work and the willingness and grit to get the job done right the first time and every time. We could not have achieved our standing in the market without your help and dedication on a daily basis. Thank you for all that you do.
