One of the greatest novelists of all time was Charles Dickens, a British novelist, journalist, and editor who wrote Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield and Great Expectations. One little known fact about Charles Dickens is that he was also a court reporter in Great Britain at the age of sixteen. Since stenotype machines were not invented yet, he and every other court reporter did their job the old fashioned way- with paper and pen. Using a six pound, 22 key, stenotype machine today, court reporters can type dictation at 200 words per minute with a 95% or better accuracy rate. Court reporting, as a profession, may not be all that glamorous, but is indispensable and can be a decisive factor in the outcome of a deposition or trial.
At IST, we understand the importance of getting it right the first time every time. In the legal world where every word counts, a court reporter’s transcript must be perfect. If a digital file or transcript is lost or destroyed and can’t be reproduced, a case can be lost, delayed or result in a retrial. Over 40 million lawsuits are filed every year in the United States. Ninety percent of the cases never go to trial, but over 90% of cases have two or more depositions. There are over 32,000 court reporters in the United States and literally hundreds of local, regional, national and international court reporting firms, yet not one single firm has more than 5% of the overall market. In a world that is ripe for litigation, IST has the talent and technology to handle any case, any size, anywhere at any time.
Under the leadership of Craig Saunders, National Director of Court Reporting Services along with Connie Snow, National Director of Operations, Court Reporting and Richard Still, Operations Manager, Court Reporting, IST exceeds the expectations of its clients across the country every day. While smaller companies are faced with the challenge of a shortage of court reporters and limited resources, IST has a national footprint with over 3,000, tech-savvy, certified court reporters.
In addition to having court reporting experts on our staff, we have forged a solid technology infrastructure enabling seamless remote depositions, high-quality video conferencing with experienced videographers, fully integrated audio conferencing, and real-time, mobile transcript review where our clients can search and download transcripts and exhibits anytime. Another great feature is that our clients can easily schedule depositions by using our on-line portal, calling us or emailing us. Quick, secure and simple.
We are also a one-stop shop. Why shop around for different vendors when one company can do it all from on-site office and facilities management, e-Discovery and litigation support, records management, legal management consulting, document management, staffing and court reporting services. These are truly exciting times as IST has morphed into a business process outsourcing company.
We are about an $80 million company today with a 30-year plan to get us to $400 million. Bold? You bet. Doable? Absolutely. You are a great team! Together, we will make this happen.
