All MFD’s (copiers) used today are digital devices. That means each one contains a hard drive that stores files containing every copy/scan/fax/print that has ever been made on that device. This is why IST requires that before any MFD is removed from a site—centralized or decentralized—site managers must be certain that the hard drives are deleted/wiped clean. For some devices, this can be done by the staff, but for others, it must be done by a technician. IST has SOP’s and trains our staff to perform this mandatory function on them.
Among our client accounts, we have law firms, hospitals, insurance companies, financial institutions, governmental agencies or contractors and educational institutions. Any one of these devices can contain confidential information on the hard drives—even if it was copies made by a paralegal at a convenience copier. Imagine how bad that might be for a client if an identity thief got their hands on that type of data. That’s why we ensure every hard drive gets deleted before a copier is ever removed from a site.
