At IST site New York Life, our IST team uses the Voice Recognition System to capture and sort over 4,800 pieces of USPS mail daily. Our Sort to Delivery process is a continuous, uninterrupted 40 hours a week process through executed via four VR stations with as many as ten employees involved. The value add of the technology and the effective training of multiple users enables the team to share tasks and assignments without ever slowing down the process – from sort to delivery.
During peak season, such as the holidays when volumes nearly double, management can pull resources from other areas of the operation, the Star Pool or even other sites to jump right in and assist with the sort process – via Voice Recognition.
The ability for our team to use Voice Recognition for mail throughout the week is appreciated by our clients and allows the Mail Room to make substantial deliveries to our clients’ 30+ floors. In addition, it affords our mail team the bandwidth to accept three messenger deliveries from the Post Office each and every day.

As you might imagine, while servicing a client such New York Life and their 170 year history, the center encounters it’s fair share of vague or unidentifiable mail. The Voice Recognition System aids tremendously to pre-identify items, which are then passed to the second level sorter for further research and inspection. The 2L Sorter determines the next action and updates the database so the next time a similar piece is identified, the actions are immediately identifiable – including destruction.
The IST team fills two recycling/shredding bins per week which contain approximately 5000 pieces of mail, magazines and postcards, the bins are shredded on-site and transported to a recycling facility, which helps keep our green planet just a little greener.
